Gyromitra ambigua (Karsten) Harmaja Cap 2-7cm across, saddle-shaped to 3 lobed, with an incurved margin; dark reddish brown with a distinctly violet tinge, sometimes almost black when dry; hymenium smooth when young, then becoming irregularly wrinkled. Stem 10-40 x 5-10mm, sometimes irregular, thicker toward the base, hollow; whitish to buff with violet tints. Odor not distinctive. Taste mild. Spores subfusiform to broadly fusiform, with 2 large oil drops, 22-33x 7.5-12µ. Deposit colour not known. Habitat singly or in groups on barren sandy soil along roads and paths near pine. In New Jersey and possibly other areas. Season September-October. Edibility not known -suspect. |
